Course Description

 

This Functional Neuroanatomy course will provide participants with the knowledge they need to identify brain and spinal cord pathology to treat psychological, psychiatric, and neurological conditions. It is designed for professionals with an interest in using applied psychophysiology, neurofeedback, or neuromodulation techniques. 

Throughout the eight-week course, participants will learn in a systematic organization about the different brain regions, functional structures, pathways, and cortical networks (sensory, motor, emotional, and cognitive) and how brain structures correlate with specific functional deficits, for example, due to emotional trauma,  neurodevelopmental, neurodegenerative disease, malformations, stroke, etc.  The course will provide participants with a strong understanding of these key concepts and how they relate to the application of neurofeedback or neuromodulation techniques. Clinical scenarios common in mental health and neuromodulation practice, along with real-life examples, will be presented during the course.

With an emphasis on neuroregulation and neuromodulation techniques (including neurofeedback, biofeedback, transcranial direct current stimulation, transcranial magnetic stimulation, photobiomodulation, nerve stimulation, etc.), Dr. Leon Morales-Quezada shares his unique experience through case presentations, clinical applications, and research.

The training is designed and taught by Leon Morales-Quezada, MD, PhD. In addition to doing clinical work, Leon supervises clinicians as BCIA approved supervisor, offers professional training/courses, and actively conducts research.

Target Audience: Clinicians such as physicians, psychologists, chiropractors, mental health counselors, social workers, physical therapists, occupational therapists, massage therapists, and all clinicians who use neuromodulation techniques.

Additionally, this course is applicable for students and professionals from nonclinical backgrounds, such as engineers, computer scientists, and data analysts, who are interested in how neuromodulation technology can be developed.

Certification Information: The training will provide you the Biofeedback Certification International Alliances (BCIA) neuroanatomy, neurophysiology and physiological psychology course requirements for those who want to get Board Certified or recertification in Neurofeedback. If you are already BCIA certified but feel the need to get a greater understanding of functional neuroanatomy in your clinical practice consider taking this course as a recertification requirement.

Cancellation Policy: All payments will be fully refunded if the cancellation is made 4 weeks prior to the training, with a $50 processing fee. Cancellations made less than 4 weeks, but more than 5 days before the training can be refunded at 50% or fully credited towards the next workshop. Cancellations made 5 days or fewer before class cannot be refunded or credited.

Background Information: Patients with neurodevelopmental disorders, acquired brain injuries, or chronic and degenerative disorders encounter significant disruption in their function and quality of life. Each of these disorders presents with its own plethora of physical, cognitive, or emotional signs and symptoms that are characteristic of specific syndromes or distinctive to neurological, psychiatric, or psychological pathology. However, all of them emerge from the same substrate of neurological structures that form the central and peripheral nervous systems. With regard to diagnosing and treating neurological disorders, clinicians first need to know and understand the anatomical basis in each of these conditions, to ensure the success of any given treatment or intervention.

It is essential to understand how the central nervous system (CNS) is anatomically organized before applying applied psychophysiology and neuromodulation techniques. Neurology, neuropsychology, psychiatry, therapists, and all other professions involved in caring for people with neurological, psychological, and psychiatric conditions need to know functional neuroanatomy, defined as the study of the structure and function of the central and peripheral nervous system.
