Neuroanatomy
Course Guide
This course is designed for clinicians seeking to acquire a foundational understanding of functional neuroanatomy. As all neurological disorders emerge from the same neural structures, it is essential to understand the anatomical basis of these conditions to ensure the success of any treatment. This training will provide you with the knowledge needed to effectively apply psychophysiology and neuromodulation techniques.
Target Audience
This course is applicable to a wide range of professionals. It is designed for clinicians who use neuromodulation techniques, including physicians, psychologists, chiropractors, mental health counselors, social workers, physical therapists, occupational therapists, and massage therapists.
Additionally, this course is for students and professionals from nonclinical backgrounds, such as engineers, computer scientists, and data analysts, who are interested in how neuromodulation technology can be developed.
Certification Information
The training will provide you with the Biofeedback Certification International Alliances (BCIA) neuroanatomy, neurophysiology and physiological psychology course requirements for those who want to get Board Certified or recertification in Neurofeedback. For more information about the BCIA certification, use the following link: https://www.bcia.org
If you are already BCIA certified but feel the need to get a greater understanding of functional neuroanatomy in your clinical practice consider taking this course as a recertification requirement.
Learning Objectives
By the end of this course, participants will be able to:
- Describe different regions of the brain, differentiate their functions, and evaluate their potential clinical relevance.
- Compare and differentiate various methods of neurophysiological studies and imaging of the human brain.
- Identify, map, and label key functional structures and pathways in the brain.
- Recognize, analyze, and interpret functional cortical networks.
- Identify sites of injury based on clinical signs and symptoms, brain images, neurophysiology, and patient history.
Course Modules
This course includes comprehensive modules on the central and peripheral nervous systems:
- Cross-sectional anatomy of the brain
- Meninges, ventricles, cerebrospinal fluid, and blood supply
- Development of the nervous system
- Neurons, glial cells, and the blood-brain barrier
- Spinal cord
- Brain stem
- Trigeminal, auditory, and vestibular systems
- Cranial nerves
- Cerebellum, Thalamus, and the Visual system
- Autonomic nervous system
- Hypothalamus and the limbic system
- Basal ganglia and the striatal motor system
- Neurotransmitters
- The Cerebral Cortex
- Common neurological disorders and syndromes
Background Information
Patients with neurodevelopmental disorders, acquired brain injuries, or chronic and degenerative disorders encounter significant disruption in their function and quality of life. Each of these disorders presents with its own plethora of physical, cognitive, or emotional signs and symptoms that are characteristic of specific syndromes or distinctive to neurological, psychiatric, or psychological pathology. However, all of them emerge from the same substrate of neurological structures that form the central and peripheral nervous systems. With regard to diagnosing and treating neurological disorders, clinicians first need to know and understand the anatomical basis in each of these conditions, to ensure the success of any given treatment or intervention.
It is essential to understand how the central nervous system (CNS) is anatomically organized before applying applied psychophysiology and neuromodulation techniques. Neurology, neuropsychology, psychiatry, therapists, and all other professions involved in caring for people with neurological, psychological, and psychiatric conditions need to know functional neuroanatomy, defined as the study of the structure and function of the central and peripheral nervous system.
