LEON MORALES
MD, PHD, BCN
he/his
Approach
Leon Morales-Quezada's research encompasses a highly interdisciplinary approach to clinical neurorehabilitation, brain development, and therapeutic modulation. A central pillar of his work focuses on the application, optimization, and mechanistic understanding of non-invasive neuromodulation techniques, including various forms of transcranial and trans-spinal electrical stimulation, as well as biofeedback and neurofeedback. He applies these technologies across a wide spectrum of neurological and psychiatric conditions, investigating targeted interventions for motor and cognitive impairments in populations affected by spasticity, cerebral palsy, traumatic brain injury, epilepsy, bipolar disorder, and disorders of consciousness. Beyond electrophysiological stimulation, his research explores innovative pharmacobehavioral and psychophysical approaches, such as the use of conditioning open-label placebos for pain management and opioid reduction, alongside specialized visual and meditation-based therapies. Grounded in foundational neurobiology, his studies frequently analyze underlying physiological mechanisms through EEG modulation, cortical connectivity, simulated head phantoms, and brain perfusion. Broadening this clinical focus, Morales-Quezada integrates his precise physiological research with overarching theoretical frameworks like "econeurobiology," examining how larger social determinants, such as health and education, fundamentally impact neurodevelopment and motor learning.
